Sony Aims to Capture 30% of Mobile Sensor Market

Forbes quotes Sony saying that it intends to win 30% of the market for image sensors used in mobile phones, up from an expected 10% for the fiscal year ended March 2011.

  1. they have no choice. There is no other market where the volume can justify the investment engaged in such business today. Other small companies have to find other "mobile-like" new market if they want to be the next OmniVision or Aptina.

  2. MOBILE = CMOS SOC with (BST + SMALL PIX + FFL + ISP + WSP), does Sony has production experience with all of this together.

    Will it adhere to MIPI standards or make its own standards.

  3. Is mobile sensor and dslr sensor are differentiated only because later needs a thick casing for image to be generated on sensor (optics) or is there other reasons to it ?

  4. What SONY doesn't know to produce? The only issue is their cost structure. There is virtually no EU/US company like SONY to cover so large technology spectrum. The main issue is not the capability to produce but the capability to make profit.

  5. Sony decided to go after the market and their investment signifies their desire to take market share. They also stated it. This is a major announcement for the image sensor community. Whether or not they succeed, it has a major impact on every other player. The one that will suffer the most is Samsung. While they have been on the rise, they are likely to get a major set back.

  8. Sony is uniquely positioned to be the leading electronics and entertainment company in the world. I actually think it will be more than just 30%

  9. I think you meant Apple, not Sony. But Sony is far more vertically integrated than Apple. Sony is likely to continue with the same old business model, but with a stronger position.
